IP Ratings Certificate

Obtaining an IP rating certificate offers a range of advantages, from establishing credibility and consumer trust to opening up new markets and driving innovation. It’s a strategic investment that can contribute to a product’s success and a manufacturer’s reputation.

IP Rating: A Key to Product Safety and Durability

  • To ensure the safety of users. An IP-rated product is less likely to malfunction or cause injury if it is exposed to water, dust, or other contaminants. This is especially important for products that are used in harsh environments, such as industrial settings or outdoor applications.

  • To protect the product from damage. Water and dust can corrode electronic components and cause other damage to products. An IP-rated product is less likely to be damaged by these contaminants, which can extend its lifespan.

  • To meet regulatory requirements. In some industries, there are regulatory requirements for the level of protection that products must have against water and dust. An IP-rated product can help manufacturers to comply with these requirements.

  • To improve the product’s marketability. Consumers are increasingly looking for products that are durable and can withstand the elements. An IP-rated product can help to differentiate a product from the competition and make it more appealing to consumers.

The IP Rating certificate which is issued by WECERT and follows the IEC 60529 standard. This standard specifies the tests that must be performed to determine the level of protection that a product has against water and dust. The IP Rating is a two-digit code that indicates the level of protection for both solid objects and liquids.

Benefits of becoming certified

Obtaining an IP (Ingress Protection) rating certificate offers several benefits to both manufacturers and consumers across different industries. Here are some key advantages:

  • 1
Product Credibility: Having a certified IP rating enhances the credibility of your product’s claims about its environmental protection capabilities. This can attract more customers who are confident in the product’s performance.
  • 2

Market Access: Many industries and markets require products to meet specific IP ratings for regulatory compliance. Having the appropriate certification ensures your product’s eligibility to enter and compete in these markets.

  • 3

Product Differentiation: A higher IP rating can set your product apart from competitors by showcasing its superior protection against dust, solids, and liquids. This differentiation can influence customers to choose your product over others.

  • 4

Consumer Trust: Customers are more likely to trust products with verified IP ratings, as this demonstrates that the manufacturer has invested in third-party testing to validate its claims. This can lead to increased sales and brand loyalty.

  • 5
Accurate Marketing: With an IP rating certificate in hand, you can accurately market your product’s capabilities. Misleading or exaggerated claims can be avoided, leading to better customer satisfaction and fewer returns due to unmet expectations.
  • 6
Quality Assurance: Going through the process of obtaining an IP rating certificate often involves rigorous testing and validation. This process can lead to improvements in product quality and durability.
  • 7
Long-Term Savings: Investing in accurate IP ratings can lead to cost savings over time by preventing unnecessary returns, warranty claims, and repairs resulting from products not meeting environmental challenges.

What is Ingress Protection rating and what does it mean?

The IP code always consists of the letters IP (Ingress Protection) followed by two digits and an optional letter. The two digits and the last letter indicate the classified protection below.

IP

Ingress Protection

0

Solids

(dust & etc.)

0

Liquids

(Water & etc.)

K

Optional

(Pressure)

First digit: Solids protection

The first digit following the IP indicates the level of protection of enclosed equipment against ingress of solid foreign objects, and against people accessing hazardous parts such as electric conductors.

X means no data available to specify a protection rating

Object size protected against:

  • Not protected

Effective against:

  • No protection against contact and ingress of objects

Object size protected against:

  • >50 mm in diameter

Effective against:

  • Any large surface of the body
    No protection against deliberate contact

Object size protected against:

  • >12.5 mm in diameter

Effective against:

  • Fingers or similar objects

Object size protected against:

  • >2.5 mm in diameter

Effective against:

  • Tools, thick wires, etc.

Object size protected against:

  • >1 mm in diameter

Effective against:

  • Most wires, screws, etc.

Object size protected against:

  • Dust-protected

Effective against:

  • Ingress of dust sufficient to cause damage inside the equipment operation
  • Complete protection against contact

Object size protected against:

  • Dust tight

Effective against:

  • No ingress of dust
  • Complete protection against contact

Second digit: Liquids protection

The second digit following IP in the code rating shows the level of equipment protection inside the enclosure against water ingress.

X means there is no data available to specify a protection rating

Object size protected against:

  • Not protected

Effective against:

  • No protection against water ingress

Object size protected against:

  • Dripping water

Effective against:

  • Vertically falling water drops

Object size protected against:

  • Dripping water when tilted < 15º

Effective against:

  • Vertically falling water drops when enclosure is tilted < 15º

Object size protected against:

  • Spraying water

Effective against:

  • Water sprayed at an angle < 60º from the vertical position

Object size protected against:

  • Splashing water

Effective against:

  • Water splashing against the enclosure from any direction

Object size protected against:

  • Water jets

Effective against:

  • Water projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm) against the enclosure from any direction

Object size protected against:

  • Water jets

Effective against:

  • Water projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm) against the enclosure from any direction

Object size protected against:

  • Immersion up to 1 m

Effective against:

  • Ingress of water when temporarily immersed (up to 1 m of submersion)

Object size protected against:

  • Immersion beyond 1 m

Effective against:

  • Ingress of water when continuously immersed (beyond 1 m of submersion)

Object size protected against:

  • Powerful high temperature water jets

Effective against:

What is IP rating Certificate?

An Ingress Protection (IP) rating certificate, as per the IEC 60529 standard, denotes the level of protection a device or enclosure offers against the intrusion of solid particles (first digit) and water (second digit). This internationally recognized certificate provides a concise indication of a product’s resistance to environmental factors, aiding consumers and industries in selecting the appropriate equipment for specific conditions. The IP rating serves as a valuable reference for understanding a product’s durability and suitability across various applications, ensuring optimal performance and longevity in diverse environments.
