Questions

Find answers to common questions about management system certification.

Management system certification is an independent assessment conducted by a certification body to determine whether an organization’s management system conforms to the requirements of a recognized standard, such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, or ISO 45001 and etc..
Certification demonstrates that the organization’s management system meets applicable requirements within the defined certification scope and supports confidence among customers, regulators, and other interested parties.

Certification confirms that an organization’s management system conforms to the requirements of a specified standard.

Accreditation is the formal recognition of a certification body’s competence, impartiality, and consistent operation to perform specified conformity assessment activities.

For example, WECERT is accredited by the Emirates International Accreditation Centre (EIAC) for activities covered by its accreditation scope.
It is important to note that accreditation applies to specific activities and standards, not automatically to every service offered by a certification body.

The appropriate ISO certification depends on your organization’s activities, industry, objectives, and stakeholder requirements.

Common management system standards include:

  • ISO 9001: Quality Management Systems
  • ISO 14001: Environmental Management Systems
  • ISO 45001: Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems
  • ISO 22000: Food Safety Management Systems
  • ISO/IEC 27001: Information Security Management Systems
  • ISO 50001: Energy Management Systems

Organizations may implement and certify more than one management system standard based on their operational needs.

WECERT can provide information about applicable certification requirements to help organizations identify relevant certification services while maintaining its independence and impartiality.

WECERT follows a structured certification process consisting of six main steps:

  1. Application Submission: The organization submits its certification application and relevant information.
  2. Application Review & Agreement: WECERT reviews the application, prepares a proposal, and establishes the certification agreement.
  3. Stage 1 Audit: The audit team evaluates the management system’s documentation, relevant conditions, and readiness for Stage 2.
  4. Stage 2 Audit: The audit team assesses implementation and effectiveness against the applicable management system standard.
  5. Independent Review & Certification Decision: Audit results are reviewed, and an authorized certification decision is made.
  6. Surveillance & Renewal: Periodic surveillance and recertification activities support the maintenance of certification.

Certification is granted only after the applicable requirements have been satisfactorily fulfilled and a positive certification decision has been made.

The time required to obtain management system certification depends on several factors, including the organization’s size, operational complexity, number of locations, certification scope, and readiness for assessment.

The process generally includes application review, contract agreement, Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits, resolution of any identified nonconformities, and an independent certification decision.

WECERT determines the appropriate audit duration in accordance with applicable certification requirements and provides relevant scheduling information during the application and proposal process.

Management system certificates are generally issued within a three-year certification cycle, subject to successful surveillance activities and continued conformity with the applicable requirements.

Surveillance audits are normally conducted annually, with the first surveillance audit generally required within 12 months of the initial certification decision.

A recertification audit and the necessary certification decision are required before the certificate expires to maintain uninterrupted certification.

The precise arrangements depend on the applicable certification scheme and requirements.

Yes. Organizations can obtain certification against multiple management system standards, depending on their activities and business objectives.

For example, an organization may seek certification against:

  • ISO 9001 for quality management.
  • ISO 14001 for environmental management.
  • ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety.

Organizations may also implement an Integrated Management System (IMS) to manage common requirements across multiple standards.

Where applicable, WECERT can conduct integrated audits covering multiple management system standards while ensuring that the requirements of each standard are adequately assessed.

You can request a certification proposal by completing WECERT’s online application form.

To prepare an appropriate proposal, WECERT generally requires information about your organization, including its activities, locations, number of personnel, requested certification standards, and proposed certification scope.

Following application review, WECERT determines the applicable certification requirements and prepares a proposal based on your organization’s specific circumstances.
